Our User Conference is coming up in May. It is so exciting to see the agenda coming together and the customers lining up to speak. I am excited about hearing Cox Communications’ story about their success with our OrgPublisher Mobile, and how it is bringing the connection between their employees to their fingertips. Now everybody has everybody else’s contact details throughout the organization, regardless of which business unit they are in.

We had previously kept our conferences pretty tight to just Users of Aquire’s software, but this year, with 4 HRCI credits available to earn, and the power of networking with so many great HR professionals facing the challenges of our day, we decided to open it up to all HR professionals.

Beth Carvin, a dynamic, say-it-like-it-is professional, is Key-noting with information near and dear to my heart – Mentoring, and its value to all involved. By connecting people to their company through personal and professional development, while building closer relationships, everybody wins.

We will have the always charming Steve Boese, host of HR Happy Hour, speaking about managing the dynamics of the current workforce with contingent workers, part time staffers, long term vendors, etc. The dynamics are increasing in this new economy, when you analyze the chemistry of the work force in your office, which are not all employees. It goes way beyond headcount management.

Steve will also host a special edition of HRHappyHour directly from the User Conference. If you are not familiar with HRHappyHour yet, you should be. This Thursday night (typically) BlogTalk Radio show is the happening place to learn about issues and creative resolutions in HR. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/steve-boese

Bryon Abramowitz, also presenting, has seen plenty of the good, bad and ugly of technology issues within HR. He has helped companies navigate through the selection of the right technology, and ushered the implantation of technology into successful realization for his clients.

Then, there is the usual fun and hilarity of spending time with the Aquire team, product training with experts from every department, and more information about the innovation of products coming from Aquire. At this conference, we will also have the unveiling of a new product! Finally, we will show you how you can now measure the impact of all your hard work in talent management.

The event is always a joy due to the people that attend. Please join us! http://www.aquire.com/structure2011/

Cheers,

Last week I told you why in my blog entry “Why go to the HR Tech Conference? Because it’s awesome!” And this week I’m sharing my list of Must-See sessions that I hope to attend. But first…

Today I have another reason to love HR Tech even more – Aquire is going to be honored at the 2010 Top HR Products Awards Luncheon! Aquire InSight™ was picked as one of this year’s Top HR Products. Between that and being selected to demo Aquire InSight at the Awesome New Technologies for HR session, I can hardly sleep. Remember the commercial where the mom is telling the kid to go to sleep the night before they leave for DisneyWorld? The little boy says, “I’m too excited to sleep!” That’s me.

Aside from the Awards luncheon and the Awesome Technologies demo, I have quite a few other reasons to look forward to this year’s conference and expo. Here’s where I hope to be on September 29 and 30. How about you?

My Must-See Sessions at HR Tech

Public Debut of the latest CedarCrestone HR Systems survey – it’s great to see what users are thinking about their HCM and Talent Management vendors. I’m sure to learn a lot from Lexy Martin’s research.

Josh Bersin’s Talent Management System Vendors survey results- Bersin studies satisfaction and digs to find the dirt, the grit and the happiness that clients have with their vendors. Check out this study before diving into your next vendor contract. Not every vendor in the marketplace is included, though, so you still have to do your research, but Bersin does provide good insight.

The Shootouts – Instead of one big general session, this year the Shootout takes place in multiple breakout sessions which gives you more time to see more technology. Great opportunities to see how solutions work in real time. Oracle NextGen HCM – Everyone wants to know what’s coming. Bill Kutik is going to put Gretchen on the hot seat about Fusion and the future of Oracle HCM. I wonder how much she’ll spill?

The Great Technology Debate – Naomi and Holincheck aren’t afraid to throw down and say exactly what’s on their mind. And these two experts are never short on opinions!

Blogger Insights – Speaking of opinions…the most interesting twist for the industry’s journalism has been the growth of the blogger community. Learn what the bloggers are thinking and how you can participate in this emerging community.

Talent Management Panel – Brave practitioners share their real world failures, what they learned and how they’ve moved on – or have they? Real world lessons are the best teachers, I find. Comcast Does HCM theTraditional Way – Comcast may say they’re traditional, but they’re really traditional with a twist. After this session come by the Aquire booth or talk to their HR people to find out how they’ve extended the SAP functionality for innovative processes with Aquire’s help. Two words – Employee Directory.

Thursday’s Expert Discussions – Take advantage of this opportunity to learn from some of the most well-known experts who make a living learning about HR topics. With a vested interest in these facets of HR technology, they’ll definitely deliver the goods. Being Global – EVERYONE needs to think Global. Even if your business isn’t global yet, your workforce, customers or vendors likely are. Every bit of understanding you can add to your knowledge bank will make you more valuable to your company and to your career.

Marc Effron’s Closing Keynote – We were lucky to have him deliver the keynote at this spring’s Aquire User Conference, so I speak from experience when I say he’s a not-to-be-missed speaker with keen insight on simplifying the Talent Management practices that have so often become overwrought with traditional complexity.

If you see me at the conference, be sure to say hello. I thrive on networking – yet another reason I love HR Tech! You can find Aquire at Booth #630. And, to read more about why people are going to the HR Technology Conference check out the Carnival of HR hosted by Sarah of I’m So Corporate.

Cheers,

The chance to network with HR professionals across the nation, the opportunity to hear and interact with leaders in our field, the ability to prospect products and services side-by-side, and the sessions focused on social media (They have a session on blogging!), to name a few. Not to mention, our friend, Marc Effron, will be following up his keynote at our conference by keynoting at HR Tech. These are all great and are already worth the trip to the Windy City. But honestly, they’re just an appetizer to Thursday night’s Awesome New Technologies, where HR Tech promises to “blow your mind” with live demos of HR’s most awesome new software selected from vendors around the world.

Bill Kutik, columnist for Human Resource Executive Magazine and Co-Chair of the HR technology Conference, just posted the winners, and guess who is on the list! We are completely and utterly honored and excited to be a part of HR Tech’s most popular event. We will be showcasing our latest solution, Insight, our 100% hierarchy-driven workforce analytics solution. So, be there on Thursday, September 30th from 4:00-5:15pm to watch me and the other winners demo their products and ask us your questions. Congratulations to the other winners of the “Awesome New Technologies”, eThority, Jobvite, Rypple, SocializedHR and Versult!

Also, be sure to say “hi” to us at Booth #630. We just might have another big announcement to make. To learn more about Insight, watch the video above, and see how “awesome” it really is. See you in Chicago!

Cheers,

Guest Post by Amy Cohen, Director of Marketing

We all hear that change is good and while I usually agree, I must admit that changing our live customer event to a virtual event was not one I was originally on board with. To say we have the greatest customers is an understatement. Which is why the entire Aquire team looks forward each year to hosting the Aquire User Conference. The event is filled with great sessions, workshops, networking and product training, but more importantly it’s the energy and the buzz you get from being around people that love your product as much as you do that makes it such a special event.

That being said, we understood that HR needs had changed a great deal in the past few months which was our motivation for going virtual. Travel and training dollars were non-existent and while I like my colleagues a great deal, I didn’t want to spend 3 days with just them at a resort – and no customers. Because of the momentum we have built over the past five years hosting live events, we didn’t want to lose that by not having a customer event at all this year. We weren’t sure if we would have four people or 400 attend our virtual sessions and were pleasantly surprised when we far surpassed our original attendance expectations!

The conference started with a fantastic keynote from Dr. Kevin Carlson, Associate Professor of Management at Virginia Tech. His keynote, “Rethinking HR Metrics and Workforce Analytics: Making Them Work For You,” set the tone for the remainder of the conference. The sessions that followed really focused on the impact that accurate information has on an organization whether it be headcount management, succession planning before major workforce transitions, short and long term organizational modeling, tracking budgets in your org chart or generating org charts specifically for executives. The common theme was if you aren’t making your workforce data work for you then it’s not going to work at all. The tips, tricks and best practices that were shared by our presenters and participants were invaluable to all those attended.

So, while virtual worked this year, we are eagerly planning next year’s live event. But enough from me, here are some comments from customers who attended the virtual conference – customers we can’t wait to see in Dallas next year!

“Thank you for having the Virtual Conference this year. It was a great idea.”

“Great conference in today’s economy and a great way to get information out to the users. Great job.”

“For this time where we are all looking at cost containment, this format was very timely. I learned a lot about your new products and got some quick tips. Great change.”

“The virtual conference had the advantage that I probably would not have been able to attend any sessions if travel was involved.”

“We really appreciate this kind of event. It has been a great help to us.”

Amy has been with Aquire since 2002 and has more that 15 years of experience in marketing and event management.

I spent three days last week attending the 2009 ASUG SAPPHIRE USA show in Orlando. As I registered, someone told me total attendance was somewhere between eight and ten thousand. Walking the floor, it seemed to me the population was less than that. But from both the standpoint of company marquees and interest in purchasing something, the quality of the attendees was very good – a positive trend I have found at several tradeshows this spring.

Many of the SAP presentations seemed to focus around analytics, highlighting the wares offered by the Business Objects group. Every presentation, from finance to HR, showcased easy-to-compile graphs and making data more actionable for immediate business decisions. This was a change from last year, where talent and succession management seemed to be the prevalent topics. Succession management and planning were, surprisingly, nearly invisible this year.

As in the past, both ASUG and SAP did a fine job of providing real world customer presentations on most topics. I was particularly impressed with two excellent presentations, one from Comcast on creating competitive advantages with SAP, and one from Bayer about executing human resource transformations.

Even the breaks, lunch, and after hours events proved useful for networking with partners, customers, and prospects. All told, it was quality time very well spent.

The return trip home from the IHRIM conference gave me time to reflect on the last few days. I visit, and we exhibit at, a lot of conferences and tradeshows. IHRIM is, and really always has been, a unique experience. The energy and community between the attendees is wonderful and contagious. Even though the economy is tough, these professionals know they need to invest in themselves and their businesses.

They are looking for ways to improve their processes, ways to expand their minds and perspectives. They share ideas and develop new ones. My favorite quote from the conference was from an attendee. She said, “I’m so glad my company is not freaking out over this economy and is still investing in being great by sending people to conferences and tradeshows to learn and do research.” What a great attitude for both her and her company!

John W. Boudreau, Ph.D. was the opening keynote speaker Monday morning. My biggest take away (of many) from his presentation is that if your leaders and users are not learning how to be BETTER at their jobs by using your technology, then you need to change your approach to your technology or work on your education of how they use it.

For example, if your managers are not BETTER at leading and giving feedback because they are using your performance review system, then it isn’t a very good system. Efficiency is not enough. That gave me MANY ideas to consider and I will be asking LOTS of questions about that for a long time. There are so many layers to the concept that we may talk about it again in this space. I would like your comments, too.

The IHRIM organization is continuing to improve. There were announcements about a bigger slate of webinars to bring education to all members who need to expand their education and awareness, as well as about the new certification for HRIS and HR Technology professionals which to begin in September. I encourage you to participate and invite your colleagues. The energy of this group is invigorating.

Cheers,
Lois

Unfortunately, I found last week’s SAPHR 2009 conference content uninspiring. The sessions were redundant, covered by so many other shows, including last year’s SAPHR show.

It’s a shame, because those people who did have to fight for their travel budget deserved a lot more. It makes you wonder what will happen to their budgeting for next year. Many people were frustrated.

If you’ve done any shopping in retail stores lately, you know that many of them have found the religion of keeping customers. They are striving to provide the best service they possibly can. Now is not the time to frustrate your customer.

On the other hand, the expo floor at the conference afforded us great conversations with customers, prospects, and partners. I completely enjoyed speaking with all of you who stopped by the booth. I hope we offered you good advice in return for your efforts of stopping by.

Cheers,

When you are planning your visit to a conference please think about some of the following tips. These are provided by Marc Ramos, networker extraordinaire, who presents a “How to Network at OHUG” (Oracle HR User Group) to a standing room only crowd each year.

Do your planning: Who do you want to meet?

Don’t “Work a Room”…”work” can be tedious, laborious, and sometimes painfully awkward – just socialize instead.

Leverage a “Wing-Man/Wing-Woman”…think Maverick/Goose (Top-Gun). Network with a partner so that you can feel more comfortable when you walk up to a group.

Diversity: talk to others who are VERY different than yourself. Age, Race, Gender, Role…you’ll be pleasantly surprised with your findings.

Be humble/generous: the greatest networkers in the world are Shoe-Shine professionals at the airport. They have a ton of information to share and make you feel like the most important person in their world during your time with them.

SMILE…this incredibly simple act invites conversation.

There are many great opportunities for HR education and networking this fall. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but I thought I would share several good choices.

HR Technology Conference Large industry show covering the technology and best practices it takes to implement the technology well.

HR-XML Technology conference designed for those needing to integrate systems or make systems interoperate.

SHRM Strategy Conference
Creating the HR Leadership Agenda

OAUG (Oracle’s User Group) and Quest have great conferences in Virginia, Atlanta, and Midwest; and other conferences have education for Peoplesoft and Oracle users.
HR.com’s Employer of Excellence

Certification Classes for PHR, SPHR, GPHR
A challenging endeavor worth the time you put in, because you are getting new ideas while you are diving into the intricacies of the HR trade. (December is testing the window.)

Then there are the webinars – WONDERFUL webinars – and too many to list here, but check out sites like:

http://www.shrm.org/
http://www.ihrim.org/
http://www.hr.com/
http://www.hronline.com/
http://www.workforce.com/

Cheers,
Lois
